The Driving School's Internal Exam: Why Not Everyone Passes, and What It Costs

Before you get to the CSDD exam, you have to pass your driving school's own internal exam. The ads barely mention it — which is a shame, because it's a separate paid step that not everyone clears on the first try. Let's look at what this exam is and why it affects the final price.

What the school exam is and why it exists

The school driving exam is the driving school's internal check before it lets you sit the state exam at CSDD. It's essentially a dress rehearsal: the same format, but run by a school instructor rather than a CSDD examiner. The idea is sensible — not sending an unready student to the expensive state exam. But this step has a price.

Why not everyone passes first time

A first exam is always more nerve-racking: the unfamiliar role of being tested, an unknown route, the fear of slipping up. Add to that the fact that "ready" and "confident while watched" aren't the same thing. So failing the school exam first time is ordinary — not a verdict on you as a driver. What actually affects exam success is covered here.

The real warning sign is different: a school that itself shows, year after year, a low share of first-time passes. CSDD publishes that statistic openly — by school and by instructor — at csdd.lv. Verifiable numbers are more honest than any "100% pass" promise.

What it costs

This is where the link to money hides. The school exam itself is paid — around €35 in Riga. And many schools state plainly in the contract that if you don't pass first time, you must take at least one to three more paid lessons before a retake. So every failure means both a repeat exam and extra paid hours. How that fits into the total cost of training is covered here.

How to get through it calmly

  • Ask in advance what the school exam and its retake cost.
  • Find out what the contract says about mandatory add-on lessons for a retake.
  • Ask your instructor to run a practice drive in the exam format before the exam itself.
  • Don't treat a single failure as a verdict — it's part of preparation, not a judgment of you.
  • Before choosing a school, look up its pass statistics at csdd.lv.

The order and cost of the school exam vary by school and change over time; check with the specific school and at csdd.lv, July 2026.

The exam goes most calmly when there's already confidence at the wheel, not just "clocked" hours. You can start building that confidence with a first lesson.
